Nearly every commercial, industrial, or institutional property today has at least a handful of fire doors. In the case of schools, hospitals, and hotels - maybe hundreds! Few people know what building and life safety codes require when it comes to fire doors. According to the National Fire Protection Agency's publication NFPA 80, all fire doors are to be inspected yearly. Each individual door must be inspected separately, and a separate report must be written up for each door. Why is Fire Door Inspection Necessary?
Fire doors are designed and tested to be impenetrable barriers against flames and smoke for anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. When a fire door is not properly maintained and inspected, the amount of time the door will withstand fire may be diminished to almost nothing! In the event of a fire, patrons, employees, residents, or anyone who is in the building may have to take refuge where ever they are able.
